About Me

Process

For this brief I was tasked with designing a product which I would then brand and advertise using a digital ribbon of 3 posters. I decided to make a boombox as my product, this is due to my love for music and the way that it brings together so many different people and communities. I wanted to look into creating a poster for each era the past, present and future of music and design the posters in a abstract and modern style.

I started off by sketching out the boombox using the internet for reference. Once I was happy with this I began to 3D model the basic shape on Maya, starting with the foundation of the box and then leading onto some of the more complicated speakers and buttons. I made sure to use the proper techniques / tools for my modelling that way I had good topology and a professional level model. I also found a tutorial on how to model a photorealistic screw, the reason I spent so much time on this was so that I would be able to use this again for future projects, this level of planning is key for anyone working as a professional in the industry.

Once I had the overall model completed it was time to start adding the textures to the geometry, I used mostly 'Ai standard surface' but also some 'phong'. I also referenced real images to get something realistic, I used: chrome, metal, plastic and rubber as my main materials but the next important part was the lighting. I added a Hdri from Hdri Haven to get accurate studio lighting but then also added in my own point lights for the vibrant colours (Pink, Teal and Oranges). Once my model was completed I then rendered it out in 'Arnold' and took this into my next software, Photoshop.

I had already sketched out the basic composition for my 3 posters, each having elements which represented their era. For example, the past had the neon synth wave which was big back in the 80s much like the boombox, then the tall modern skyscrapers which we have in modern day and finally the abstract artifact floating in the air for the future. I downloaded assets like the spaceman and clouds from copyright free websites and tried to integrate these to my scene by using curve adjustment layers and also some colour grading. I took full advantage of Photoshops artboard feature to allow me to work on all the posters simultaneously, this allowed for a fast work flow and consistent colour palette. The posters are simple but effective, due to their vibrant colours and stunning imagery I was able to create a sort of pop art style with my own unique taste. I finished it off by adding some simple typography around the edges of the canvass, this helped tie all 3 posters together and made for a finished product.

Below are some screenshots to show the progression of the scene.
